About JPGPNG

JPGPNG is a free, focused tool for one job: turning JPG images into PNG, quickly and privately, with an optional transparent background.

Why we built it

Converting an image should not require uploading it to a stranger's server, creating an account, or waiting in a queue. Yet most online converters work exactly that way. Modern browsers can decode and encode images on their own, so we built a converter that does all of the work on your device. Your files never leave your computer or phone, and conversion is often faster than an upload would be.

What makes it different

  • No upload, ever. The page contains the whole converter. Once it has loaded, it keeps working even if you go offline.
  • Smaller PNGs. A built-in lossless optimiser (oxipng, compiled to WebAssembly) produces PNGs that are typically a third to a half smaller than a plain browser export, without changing a pixel.
  • Transparent backgrounds. Remove a white or solid-colour background while converting, with controls for tolerance and edge handling.
  • Correct orientation. Phone photos are rotated according to their EXIF tag, so they don't come out sideways.
  • Honest guidance. Our guides explain what conversion can and can't do. Every number in them comes from tests we ran ourselves with the same code that powers the converter, and we describe how we tested so you can check.

How the site is funded

JPGPNG is free to use. To cover hosting and development we show advertising from Google AdSense on the converter and guide pages. Ads never have access to your images: conversion happens in your browser, separately from anything an ad network can see. Details are in our privacy policy.

Technology

The site is a static website with no server-side processing of user data. Images are decoded with your browser's built-in image decoder, background removal runs in a background thread (Web Worker), PNG files are written with the browser's encoder and optionally optimised with oxipng via the jSquash WebAssembly build, and batches are packed into ZIP files with fflate. We're grateful to the authors of these open-source projects.
